Foundation .Course 1. Course 1 will cover elements of yoga over the first weekend and 8 individual days of training. You will be expected to conduct home study, write some essays on what you have learned and keep a journal of personal development. We recommend that you begin your essay writing as soon as possible after the start of the course rather than cram it at the last moment. The course tutors will discuss with you all the obstacles you encounter and will encourage you to work to remove these obstacles. Incorporated in this course will be specific instruction from an educational lecturer in how to go about the mechanics of teaching so you can be equipped to deal with those situations which present normally in a yoga class.
The course is not done at high speed and is not what we would wish to call “ intensive”—this is because we know that learning—true deep learning –takes place best in a quiet calm atmosphere. This has proven to be the case since the inception of the course. BUT-------!! before you explore the courses you might like to read some of the comments made by this years students;this is a direct quote from Heather;
"Dear Andy,I`m still not sure what to write for the comments cos nothing seems to do the course justice or if it did it would sound too OTT!But I`ll try. For me the Shanti school yoga teacher training course has really helped me in every area of my life.I am now on a journey that the course has started me on & everything I have learnt is affecting my life in a positive way.The support of the tutors & other students has been great & so far the experience is opening up new possibilities for me with the tools & knowledge that I have learnt.I can certainly recommend it highly as a unique & inspiring opportunity." Another quote this time from Kate in Sheffield;
"This course has deepened and extended my experience of yoga in so many ways, how to apply it in teaching and in my own life. What stands out is that the transformation has been easy and natural, because it has been my own, with guidance from tutors who teach from their own authentic experience". We feel as if that says it all!! Now onto the content! Course Content Postures –the core asanas, and the counter poses Body mechanics related to anatomy and physiology Points of awareness in postural work
Anatomy and Physiology
Yamas and niyamas and the philosophical basis of yoga
The teaching of asanas Introducing philosophy into your class Mind and its problems Dealing with difficulties encountered in your class Teaching practice—the mechanics of teaching, lesson plans etc Sun salutations and other sequences
Mind Body and Spirit connections Meditation and Relaxation Assisting yoga postures for the less able Mental obstacles and how to tackle them
Each participant will be given a course manual at the start of the course containing all the modules for the complete course. There is much very valuable material in the manual so you are wise to see this as part of the resources of the course—it contains many explanations that can be set out in writing whilst the teaching days are essentially for those elements which cannot easily be set out on paper and are best transmitted verbally—the manual and the day workshops are, thus, complementary.
Assessment of practice.
This is an outline of the basic structure of the course. The requirements of the individuals within the group determine the “ mix” of time spent. The course content will be provided by at least 4 teachers during the year, depending upon the subject. This is partly because we recognise that no one person should dictate all the elements—it is best given to those with differing perspectives so that new teachers in training do not think that there is only one way.!
