40 year old man, very fit and healthy capable of riding his mountain bike for 100 miles in a day which he regularly does. Numerous falls off the bike with only minor abrasions. Starts to experience knee pains even though he has been having spinal treatment for 7 years with no sign of knee problems. He revealed that he had as a youth spent hundreds of hours running on tarmac. I found massive contracture of the calves but also heavy contracture of the lateral hamstrings. Medial hams and medial calves were fine. This may well be in response to bow legs when the lateral part of the muscles are working to avoid furtherance of the bowing. Two sessions of deep tissue work into calves and hams produced removed the knee pains which during the process moved around all over the knee. This lesson is valuable for all those practitioners learning the art—do not be deflected by the presence or position of the symptoms. In fact seldom take any notice of where the symptoms appear –there are very few circumstances in which the musculoskeletal sends it messages to the place where the CAUSE lies—it is really just like the human being himself!! The complaint comes out of the mouth but the symptoms appear elsewhere!! The patient wants to keep stating where the pains are currently being felt but you must, the vast majority of the time, just nod sagely and take very little notice!!. |
